Another great NYC event for you- KR3T

They say “dancing with the feet is one thing, dancing with the heart is another” and no one puts more heart and soul into this art form, than the members of KR3T’S (Keep Rising To The Top).

KR3T’S, led by Director/Choreographer, Violeta Galagarza is considered the pot of gold, at the end of the rainbow that is Spanish Harlem.  Galagarza, a former Alvin Ailey dance student founded KR3T’S, a non-for-profit organization in 1989 providing an outlet for young adults who were dealing drugs, joining gangs and dropping out of high school.  She invested her time, attention, and talent to show these teens an alternative to street life.  Her dance classes are a fusion of salsa, hip hop, jazz, African dance, Modern dance and many more.  Her students are young, vibrant and full of passion and dedication, which can felt with every movement.

This year, the company celebrates their existence with an 18th Anniversary Fundraiser “For Old Times Sake”, hosted by Power 105.1’s Cherry Martinez and Eminem’s own hype-man D-Stroy.  The two-day extravaganza will take place on September 21st and 22nd at El Museo Del Barrio-Teatro Hecksher located at 1230 5th Ave on 104th St.

The Written Nerd Blogs Brooklynites

The Written Nerd:
As I've been casting about trying to get a sense of the Brooklyn character, turns out the creators of a new book from Brooklyn art publisher powerHouse Books beat me to it. Photographer Seth Kushner and writer Anthony LaSala are the brains behind The Brooklynites, a gorgeous book of photographs, interviews and essays (coming out in October) on the diverse denizens of the best borough. The accompanying photography exhibition will be up at the powerHouse Arena (an amazing combination of "gallery, boutique, book store, performance, and events space" in the DUMBO neighborhood) from September 6 to September 30. Seth and Anthony kindly agreed to a joint email interview for Brooklyn Lit Life, in which they talked about the surprises and rewards of their project and their love for the place they grew up.... read on.

Why I make books, DP contributes to the Magnum Photos blog:

Some people ask me why I make books, in my case illustrated volumes of photography and the photographic image. To some, I say "We're stupid and don't know any better," and to others I lament it's the only thing we know how to do, and such is our lot. But then, truth be told, thinking about it, it's our native human desire to tell stories, or more precisely help others tell them, and our medium is the photographic image, and few have become literate in appreciating it (hence the minute audience), and even fewer in constructing it well, even among the highly regarded publishers. "Daniel Power and I are thrilled and honored to be working with such a talented group of people, and
