NEW YORK PHOTO FESTIVAL 2009

Gay Sex, Coming of Age, War Dreams and The Flow

William A. Ewing's exhibition All over the place! blends the work of historical figures like Ernst Haas and Jacob Holdt with contemporary work, and celebrates photography's rich diversity. Chris Boot is pushing sexual boundaries with his show Gay Men Play. For I am not sure I know what kind of girl I am, Jody Quon selected a series of portraits that detail the essence of what it is to be female. Jon Levy's show, Home for Good, examines the domestic world-where we receive most of our photography.

Exhibit Your Photographs at the New York Photo Festival!
Exhibit your photographs at the New York Photo Festival!
We are all photographers now!
This includes you!

Throughout photography's entire history, the amateur and the professional have represented distinct and often contrary approaches to photography, each battling for supremacy. Has the digital revolution tilted the field of battle irrevocably in the amateur's favour? Or has it swept this traditional rivalry into the dustbin? Can anyone say?

Why not share one or more of your photographs with the festival's visitors? They'll be projected in the public arena, with your name clearly visible in the corner of each image.

A Day Spent in Bed Projected 20 Feet High in 3-D.

Photographer Christopher Clary will be showing 3-D snapshots of himself and his husband at the New York Photo Festival. The images are from a Viewmaster series that place them in different domestic settings, including a day spent in bed sleeping, eating, watching TV, taking a bathroom break, getting annoyed with the camera, and watching even more TV. Clary's perspective is a bit claustrophobic in how the world is self-contained within the viewer. "I bring the camera in close specifically to notice the little things that make us us," he says. Yet what could be very private is somehow familiar both because it's banal and because the 3-D effect turns the cat's tail, his husband's hip, and pillows upon pillows into a natural wonder, not unlike a vintage reel of tourist monuments. In preparing for his talk Clary created anaglyphs — two images recombined to make one whose 3D effect is revealed with red-blue glasses. "It'll be interesting to see how the intimacy translates to 20-feet high knowing the originals are projected in inches and normally viewed one person at a time." Come see for yourself and hear Clary speak at his artist talk on Sunday, May 17th, 4:00pm at St. Ann's Warehouse, glasses included! Read more »

"New Documentations" Special Screenings Hosted by Festival Cofounder Frank Evers. Saturday, May 16, 8pm at St. Ann's Warehouse

The "New Documentations" Special Screening will shine a spotlight on powerful, new, in-depth work by leading photographers. "New Documentations" will attempt to focus on new/recent long-form work which has a personal dimension to it. Work where the photographer is looking at something familiar, personal, or the notion of the known versus the unknown. The idea is that knowing more about ourselves is just as important as knowing about the "other," or that which is exotic. The photographers that Evers has included in this Special Screening can be described as everything from photojournalists to fine art photographers, but the thread which draws their work together is their insider/outsider perspective, and their familiarity with, or personal connection to, their subjects and the worlds that those subjects inhabit.

"New Documentations" will feature work by multiple artists—a series of short pieces by a selection of leading photographers from around the world. Artists are being given a 4-5 minute slot in which to present their work. Many of the artists will be on hand to answer questions after the screening. Read more »
