French cultural magazine, Blackpool, meant no harm when it called Q. Sakamaki’s book, Tompkins Square Park, “Le Parc de L’Enfer” (or, Hell Park). Rather it seems this alternative culture magazine felt a sort of solidarity with the resistance by residents on the Lower East Side during the Police Riots and subsequent gentrification; a resident of the area, Sakamaki’s photographs portray the liveliness of the neighborhood that was, a far leap from the way it is now.
