“If emotion is best described as energy in motion, thenphotographer James Houston can be described as one who captures that energy and transforms it into art.”
—Karen-Jane Eyre, Editor, Not Only Black + White
“His images suggest a thousand complex narratives. Amazingly, he captures the most ethereal art form in a way that a choreographer, whose work dies with the curtain’s descent, can only dream of.”
—Graeme Murphy, Artistic Director, Sydney Dance Company
Dancers from America’s leading dance companies are brought together in award-winning photographer James Houston’s unique photographic project created to benefit AIDS charities—Move.
Move, a collection of stunning black-and-white photographs, captures the raw energy and emotion of movement. Pushing the human body to its physical limits, Houston creates unique images that go far beyond traditional dance photography.
Over 50 of New York’s leading dancers, from companies such as Paul Taylor, New York City Ballet, Pilobolus, David Parsons, and Alvin Ailey, gave their time to support the project. Included in this impressive lineup was renowned principle dancer Desmond Richardson, who starred alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones in the movie Chicago.
Houston sculpts and directs the dancers’ bodies with his graphic eye, creating powerful photographs that move and inspire.
All author royalties will be donated to DRA (Dancers Responding to AIDS).
